The Basque city of Bilbao is located in northern Spain, stretching 14 km along the narrow valley of the river Nervión, south of the Bay of Biscay, where the estuary of Bilbao is formed. Bilbao is the capital of Bizkaia province in the autonomous community of the Basque Country. Once the industrial heartland of the Spain's Basque Country, Bilbao has reinvented itself with the opening of Frank Gehry's stunning Museo Guggenheim in 1997. Almost immediately after its opening, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao became such a popular tourist attraction that million tourists from around the world have visited the city since then. This has transformed Bilbao or Bilbo in Basque so radically that today it is a center of culture and design. The new sleek subway system designed by Norman Foster, the Santiago Calatrava airport and his glass Zubizuri footbridge, the Philippe Starck Alhóndiga Bilbao cultural venue, the Abandoibarra park and commercial complex next to the Guggenheim - a project by César Pelli, have all contributed to turning Bilbao into a major European culture and art center. Despite this unprecedented cultural revolution and the tourism boom, Bilbao has remained hard-working, but open and friendly, has kept its down-to-earth authentic soul and unique identity as well as Europe’s oldest and most enigmatic language. The charming old city in the Casco Viejo and 14th century cathedrals contrast with the spectacular modern urban buildings. It is this intriguing mix of tradition, character, modern architecture and infrastructure, history, green mountains and rugged coastline that make Bilbao a must-see destination for every motorcycle traveler. Not to forget that Bilbao's restaurants and pintxos which is Basque for tapas offer not only some of the best places to eat and drink in whole Spain, but some of what is undoubtedly Europe's finest cuisine.
